Volunteering

Emergency preparedness begins at a local community level

At the heart of every charitable organization is the Volunteer, man and woman who who give their time and resources without expecting any financial reward to help vulnerable people exposed to recurring natural and other disasters and who are unable to develop disaster mitigation or community development programs on their own.

Volunteers play a key role in On Guard for Humanity’s activities worldwide. Volunteers either working from within the confines of our home office in Canada, or in far away remote corners of the world, make a noble contribution to the thousands of disenfranchised people living in high-risk and vulnerable communities worldwide.

On Guard for Humanity volunteers come from all walks of life, but all share a common thread; “Service to Humanity” volunteers make a difference to people in Canada and abroad, in most cases volunteers go unnoticed working behind the scenes supporting and training people. Volunteering is not a job, but a calling and an opportunity to learn new skills, meet people, understand them and their cultures.

On Guard for Humanity has several volunteer openings in Canada:

  • Pursuing and following-up On Guard for Humanity donors;
  • Managing and mailing letters to potential donors;
  • Pursuing web-enabled donor programs;
  • Organizing brownbag matching fund presentations;
  • Social events;
  • Researching potential projects both in Canada and abroad, determining  needs and solutions;

And for those wanting to serve abroad, opportunities include, but are not limited to:

  • Doctors, nurses and medical support personnel;
  • Managers and office administrative personnel including IT and telecommunications specialists;
  • Teachers, trainers and demonstrators;
  • Academics, sociologists, linguists and  interpreters;
  • Search and rescue officers, first responders, firefighters, and  law enforcement officers;
  • Horticulturists, engineers, water specialists, mechanics and drivers;
  • Builders, carpenters, electricians and others,

Volunteers help On Guard for Humanity pursue potential donors, organizing brownbag donor presentations, social events designed to garner support from potential donors to managing our mailing and web-enabled campaigns.

Professional linguists, sociologists, doctors and nurses, engineers and other professional trainers help On Guard for Humanity prepare other Volunteers to serve at the On Guard for Humanity Centres, abroad including possible service training local people in these Centres as well.

Abroad, volunteers help On Guard for Humanity implement  local community-based training programs designed to mitigate losses caused by natural and other disasters by empowering people within each community to participate and play an active role in their communities through well though localized disaster mitigation and prevention programs to health and family hygiene, and education in the prevention and spread of HIV/AIDS, malaria and other communicable diseases including immunization programs.

Other services include, the establishment and development of programs in such areas as water and land management, to provide safe clean drinking water to their respective communities and irrigation systems designed to increase crop yields and income for the community. These programs are designed to bring about positive economic change within a community for long-term sustainability and capable of maintaining On Guard for Humanity programs going forward.

Volunteering is much more than just a job. Its team work, between the volunteer, the community and local authorities and creating opportunities for members of a recipient community, empowering them and making them productive citizens. Volunteers teach and learn about new cultures and local skills, as volunteers we serve, we teach, mentor, listen and guide people to becoming productive and proud citizens.

Our success is measured on our ability to get entire communities involved, ensuring the our messages and theirs are understood and applied effectively, throughout each community with whom we work. Once people gain an appreciation for their role in the program and know that they own their own success, then we know that we have done our job well. This is an excellent opportunity to foster new relationships with the local community members work with them and create lifelong friendships.

Robert F. Kennedy once said: "that each time an individual acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he or she sends forth a tiny ripple of hope... those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.” On Guard for Humanity is the embodiment of that vision and hope.

Everyone regardless of age, education or income, can do something that has a lasting effect that makes a significant difference in the lives of others less fortunate than us. On Guard for Humanity provides you with the training and the tools that will enable you to share your good deeds in service of humanity.
